[ISLMA-Share] surveillance cameras in school library?

[Email list for the Illinois School Library Media Association]

We have them all over the building, including two in the library.  They are not actively monitored, and are primarily used to review something that has happened (ex. theft or student discipline problem).  We've only had to review the library videos a couple of times in the six years that I have been here.  I believe the local police department can patch into the system to monitor them in case of an emergency.

Do any of your school libraries have surveillance cameras (just video, no audio)?
We're a high school library, and it would be mounted high on the ceiling in a central location and have 4 cameras pointed in each direction. Any issues or pros/cons?  Any feedback would be helpful.

It seems like from this article, that it's not an infringement on students' right to privacy.
