[ISLMA-Share] surveillance cameras in school library?

Hello!
We have two cameras in the library and two in our computer lab that is attached to the library.
We are looking at adding more because the two in the library are not the greatest quality and quality decreases with distance, so we were unable to identify an issue recently because of the quality.
Image quality aside, they have been amazing. Issues tend to happen when I'm gone, so I'm able to go back and look at the camera to identify the culprits.

My only advice:1) make sure it's a camera you can go back and watch at least a couple of weeks worth of recorded video2) make sure the quality is good all around the room. The students will probably figure out after awhile where the blind spots are if any exist.

Thanks,

We have one at our freshman campus. Hesitant at first, but honestly it's been a godsend. A parent accused the librarian of losing her son's paper. Review tape. Librarian never handed any paper. Keyboard destroyed. Review tape. Culprit very visible. Chronic book thief uncovered.
Big Brother is definitely watching; might not be 100% negative.

We have about 10 scattered about our junior high. The office can monitor what's going on throughout the building at any given time.
There is one camera in my library. It is stationed in the corner behind the circ desk and supposedly shows the entire library.

We have them all over the building, including two in the library.  They are not actively monitored, and are primarily used to review something that has happened (ex. theft or student discipline problem).  We’ve only had to review the library videos a couple of times in the six years that I have been here.  I believe the local police department can patch into the system to monitor them in case of an emergency. Cathy GottliebLRC DirectorNCHS WebmasterNaperville Central High School630-420-6549 From: islma-bounces at list.railslibraries.info [mailto:islma-bounces at list.railslibraries.info]On Behalf Of Email list for the Illinois School Library Media Association

Subject: [ISLMA-Share] surveillance cameras in school library? Do any of your school libraries have surveillance cameras (just video, no audio)? We’re a high school library, and it would be mounted high on the ceiling in a central location and have 4 cameras pointed in each direction. Any issues or pros/cons?  Any feedback would be helpful. It seems like from this article, that it’s not an infringement on students’ right to privacy.https://nces.ed.gov/pubs2006/stu_privacy/surveillance.asp# Thanks,Aimee UyDGNLibrary.orgDowners Grove North High SchoolLibrary Department Chair630-795-8461
