[ISLMA-Share] Cataloging Polish books

I’m having a similar problem, except I need to catalog items that are in Chinese, Vietnamese, Polish, and Korean.

For the call numbers, I’m using what was already in place when I inherited this collection, 460 for Spanish fiction and 411 for non-fiction in Spanish. Hence, I took that and then modified ones-digit in Dewey by adding the continent’s number from Geography. Hence, Chinese got 465 and Polish got 464.5. It may not be perfect, but it does put the books of various languages together in the same area. Right now, our collection has roughly 400 copies in Spanish and maybe 10 copies of each of the other languages. My toughest part is finding the age appropriate materials in other languages.

Anyone have a source for purchasing US YA books translated to Tagalog or Arabic?

As far as the MARC record goes, my aide is bilingual, so she translates the 505, 520, and 600-690 fields in the MARC record for Spanish. For other languages, I needed to rely on Google Translate (yes, I know it has errors). Since Destiny will allow almost every field to be duplicated, the students see both the English and native language record. Example:
When Ivan, a gorilla who has lived for years in a down-and-out circus-themed mall, meets Ruby, a baby elephant that has been added to the mall, he decides that he must find her a better life. Presented in Korean.

My frustration is the MARC records I find often don’t have the same subject headings as the original in English. Hence, I get to do a lot of manual cleanup of the 650 field in the MARC records.

Sincerely,

Alan, Librarian serving Brooks Middle School

Hmmm. I didn't mess with the MARC records! I suppose you could add a call number tag that reflected the different one. In Destiny the call number of your individual item can be changed without updating the MARC record.

For example, for my volume of Clifford va al zoológico, in the MARC record the call number tag reads E, while in the Add Copy menu I keyed in ESP E BRI. You could edit the MARC record with another call number tag with ESP E BRI, but I didn't bother. I used the E suggestion from copy cataloging as the classification after Spanish.

Hope that helps!

Yes, we do the same with the separate section and the addition to the call number/spine label (POL, SPA). I should have specified--I need help with the MARC records. Thanks!

We are in the process of pulling our Spanish language titles out of the 460's and making a separate Spanish language section. Everything gets an ESP prefix, and then the rest of the designation it would normally get - ESP E BRI, for example, ESP 551.5 FOW, ESP FIC RUS, etc.

I don't know if you want to make a separate section, but it's one idea.

Hi,
I am having trouble cataloging some Polish books my principal purchased. Some of them are Polish versions of popular books (ex: Fancy Nancy), and some are not. Any cataloging suggestions? I contacted the vendor (Rainbow Books), who said they would help, but are not helping as of yet...

Thanks,
Carrie
