The Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) handles the federal
funds sent to the states through the Library Services and Technology Act
(LSTA). Those funds are used by the Illinois State Library to be able to
fund services to all types of libraries as well as grant opportunities.
Since the State of Illinois has made cuts to funds for library services,
these federal dollars are cruicial. Loss of these funds will impact all
types of libraries.

Another program that IMLS funds are the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian
Program grants for professional development. The Alliance Library System
used this grant in 2003 to recruit and mentor 31 graduate students who
enrolled in the Dominican University School of Library and Information
Science. The Chicago Public Schools also received a grant in 2006 for the
training of fifteen elementary school teachers to become school librarians
through Dominican University. Some of the readers of I-Share may have
received their master's degrees from one of these programs.

There are no doubt other examples. I just did a quick search of the IMLS
website. IMLS has been around now for about 20 years.
