The AASL has issued a challenge to school librarians across this country to
invite their Congressional Delegations (US Senators and Representatives) to
visit their school library in April. Now, with federal funding for
libraries zeroed out in the President's proposed budget, it is more
important than ever to educate Congress about school libraries!

Audrey Church, President of AASL, has issued this challenge to get every
state's senators and representatives invited to school libraries during
their Spring Recess during the weeks of April 10 or April 17.

Patti Fleser, ISLMA President, forwarded the following information:

Friends,
If you were able to be on the Advocacy and Legislation Coalition call last
Wednesday, March 8, or if you’ve had a chance to listen to the recording,
you know that I’ve issued a challenge!

Based on suggestions from the ALA Washington Office, we’re working to have
every Representative and every Senator receive at least one invitation to
visit a school library in his/her home district/state during the week of
April 10 or April 17 when they are home on spring recess. This coincides
perfectly with April as School Library Month; our theme this year is
“Because School Libraries Empower Students”—the stars could not be any more
aligned!
The hashtag for the initiative is #Leg2SchLibrary.

A tip document with instructions for finding senators’ and representatives’
contact information and template with sample invitation is linked here
<http://knowledgequest.aasl.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/InviteALegislator.pdf%20>
.

We’re asking that once invitations are issued, folks let AASL know using
this simple form <http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/emf/aasl/legislator>.
If invitations are accepted, members should let AASL know (aasl at ala.org) so
that we can take advantage of publicity opportunities to raise awareness
for school libraries!

A KQ blog post, *If You Invite a Legislator to the Library*, will appear
very soon.

Any assistance that you can provide in getting this message out to your
members is greatly appreciated. Let’s make sure that every Representative
and every Senator receive at least one invitation to visit a school
library!

2016-2017 AASL President
