[ISLMA-Share] Battle of the Books

To keep interest up...
*We do not insist that all teams read all 20 books, yet there is a great
deal of enthusiasm and excitement, and I know several teams have read all
of the books more than once.
*We do not let the 4th graders come to the 5th grade battle...we keep the
process in suspense. I think if the 4th graders realized how much work was
involved, they might not join the following year.
*We created a Google Classroom for each individual team, to keep track of
their own reading progress. It is fun and high tech and they like it.
*We put at least 15 of the titles on mp3s that require a parent contract
before checkout. The kids walk around school wearing their earbuds, and I
think they like that. Only 5th graders can check out the mp3s.
*We sent lots of communication home. We have notices in the monthly
newsletter. We have posters displayed.
*We created a plaque that honors the top two teams every year.
*We encourage all students to join....even our special needs students.
*Our 5th grade teachers totally support and encourage our students. They
come eat lunch in the library for an entire week when we hold the
quarterfinals, and they serve as timers and record keepers.
*Our principal sits in on lunchtime/recess practices and controls the
buzzers for the semi-finals.
*We have consistently had 90-98% participation in the last 10 years.
I hope these ideas help.
