[ISLMA-Share] farewells for the littles?

For my last day of kindergarten I have them make a bookmark for the next year’s incoming class. I start by reviewing all the books we’ve read in class. Quick show of each cover actually. Then I have them think of their favorite character/book. I have a large bookmark form where the top says ”I hope you enjoy” and the there is a box drawn so they can draw their favorite character from the book and print the character’s name. The bottom half of the form is empty. They sign their first name on the back. If we have time, we share our bookmarks with each other and create a chart of the characters each person has chosen. Tacky the penguin is the reigning champion.

Then in September, I fill in the front with the new kindergarten student’s name and library number and laminate them. It is handed out on the first day of library so the kids have a reminder to take home of their number which they need to memorize.

I think the students forget over the course of the year, so I like to do a year in review and just touch on all the things we did. We're always amazed to see all we''ve done! You can have them pull images or objects out of a bag or box, or you can have them just recall their favorites.

It's quite silly, but we usually say good bye to our books when we put them in the book drop (we rarely put them in, as they usually bring their old and new books at the same time, and then return and checkout at the same time). It's very exciting and then next year we say hello to old friends =)

Do you do any kind of "goodbye, library" wrap up with your primary age kids? I'm wondering if they need some kind of closure to the year and what you do to provide that.

Thanks,
