Faculty Job Description: Librarian

Reports to:  Principal

Start Date: July 2017

Supervises: Library Volunteers



Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, with a concentration in school library management or a Bachelor’s Degree with an endorsement in Library and Information Science, 2+ years’ teaching or library experience in a high school setting



Desired: Illinois School Library License, Literacy Certification a plus


School Description:

Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory School, which opened its doors to its first freshman class in the fall of 2008, is a Catholic Jesuit secondary school (grades 9-12) serving families and students in the Austin neighborhood and surrounding communities of Chicago’s Westside. As a school, Christ the King Jesuit College Prep is unique in that it calls all members of its community—students, parents, teachers, staff and administrators—to work toward a common mission and vision. In a school culture of peace and excellence, Christ the King provides an educational opportunity that can transform students, families and the larger community.  Through academics, activities and leadership opportunities, athletics, campus ministry, service and work, Christ the King students will thrive and grow in an environment that provides the uniquely Jesuit <http://www.ctkjesuit.org/about/jesuit_catholic_identity.html> fundamental of Cura Personalis – care of the whole person.  Christ the King Jesuit is also a “Cristo Rey” school, relying on a unique and innovative corporate internship program in which students from families of limited financial means earn up to three-quarters of their tuition costs through jobs in professional settings.  The fees for the students’ services are assigned directly to the school to pay a significant portion of the cost of education.



Summary:  Faculty at Christ the King deliver rigorous, College Prep instruction to our students in accordance with the Cristo Rey Network Curriculum, USCCB and College Readiness Standards.  Faculty are charged with modeling Grad at Grad principles for our students, and helping to deepen the faith life of students by fostering opportunities for students to connect with Christ, as our foundation and example.



1.    Develop and implement a rigorous information literacy curriculum using print and online resources, which is aligned with Cristo Rey Network structures and effectively builds students’ research and media skills.

2.    Actively collaborate with colleagues to support and strengthen the instructional program of Christ the King Jesuit College Prep (i.e. administer library assessments and surveys to determine the needs of students and teachers, provide training to support students and teachers in effective use of information tools, help teachers build developmentally appropriate, leveled classroom libraries, assist with research, reading, or technology needs of students and faculty, etc.)

3.    Administer and set policies for the library space that are aligned with the Catholic, Jesuit mission of the school

4.    Coordinate supervision of the library space for all hours the library is open, giving careful attention to ensuring that library hours meet student needs and usage patterns

5.    Purchase, weed, and conduct inventory of materials to ensure availability of a robust collection of materials that meet student needs and support goals for college readiness

6.    Maintain the library web site presence and databases (Gale/Cengage, EBSCO, NoodleBib, etc.) necessary for research in a College Prep environment

7.    Maintain the library catalog, including upgrades, and material and patron changes

8.    Promote the library space through attractive displays within the library and school corridors

9.    Promote school wide literacy initiatives that build community and foster a love of reading

10.  Solicit donations and secure grants to support the library program

11.  Network with other libraries & library associations:

?    JSEA, including other local Jesuit schools (St. Ignatius and Cristo Rey)

?    Chicago Public Library (Conduct regular campaigns to get library cards for all kids)

?    HSLMA (High School Library Media Association)

?    ISLMA (Illinois School Library Media Association) and RAILS

?    American Library Association

12.  Supervise the library volunteers and/or student workers (when available)

13.  Collaborate with Administration and academic departments to build and maintain a professional resource collection for teachers

14.  Collaborate with the Assistant Principals and academic departments to implement a summer reading program

15.  Teach and act consistently in accordance with the stated mission, objectives, and policies of the School as articulated in the Employee Handbook and the Faculty Policies & Procedures

16.  Model the “Graduate at Graduation” statement as consistent with Jesuit, Catholic education, and strive to support students in valuing and attaining those qualities;

17.  Participate in faculty meetings, curriculum development, substitute duties, admissions interviews, intervention planning and implementation, and professional development including, but not limited to, Cristo Rey Network Summer Institutes (dates determined annually each spring), as planned

18.  Participate in Faith Formation including, but not limited to, Faculty-Staff Retreats, Ignatian Themes Workshops, and Mission Meetings

19.  Respect and help form the spiritual values of students and support the Jesuit, Catholic identity of the School by exemplifying—in the Teacher’s own actions—the characteristics of Christian living, including being a leader of prayer and supporting the liturgical and spiritual life of the School

20.  Other duties as assigned
