Kristen,
Would you be willing to share those policies? I would love to see them.

I too work for a Catholic school and I definitely have a collection policy in place. I wrote it my first year here, along with a weeding policy and a challenge policy. In 8 years I have helped with three book challenges, all resolved well. None were for my content but for classroom book choices. My policies informed how the school dealt with the challenges. Everyone really should have one in place, one that your admin is aware of and in full support.

I’d be happy to share them if someone needs an example.

I work at a parochial high school as a teacher and serve as the librarian because no one else was and I have the training. I don’t have a collection development plan or any of the other things that you are asking for. However, I have a very supportive principal and a back up plan. If someone were to challenge content I would talk to them about how it is better for a student to confront hard topics at a school where they are surrounded by teachers who know our church body’s doctrine rather than in a situation where they don’t have that support. Now, I still look for YA literature that isn’t super explicit, but I feel I have some latitude in what I look for. I have also spoken to our theology teacher about creating an assignment where students read books, pick out an issue that is doctrinally wrong, and have to write about how to handle it with church teachings in mind. That is something that may help you in the future as a way to justify purchasing.

Hi,

We are having a bit of a book challenge here and my principal has asked me to collect some data from parochial schools on the topic of books for 6th-8th grade.

I have some parochial school library specific questions-

• If you have a reconsideration form for a book that a parent objects to, would you please share that form with me? Also, your written collection development plan, please?
• What review sources do you use to acquire books for your collection?
• Does anyone consistently use Common Sense Media as the ultimate decision maker as to whether or not to add a book to your collection? If you do this, have you found any issues with doing this?
• Do you have a hot list of topics you have to avoid in your collection?
Thanks for your time.

Linda
