During Banned Books Week, I do a lesson with our social studies teachers on the Rights and Responsibilities we as citizens have with regards to the 5 Freedoms that are protected by the First Amendment.

We discuss examples of censorship from various articles from magazines and newspapers.

I model an example of censorship in China with the Nobel Peace Prize. This leads to a discussion of what a totalitarian regime is compared to our government. I cover how to skim for answers.

We then have a whole class discussion on the items that were challenged or banned. The kids explore themes of why things get challenged. The discussion leads to why do we have libraries and compulsory education in our country.

Sincerely,

Alan, Librarian serving Brooks Middle School
