The ALA Public Programs Office (ALA PPO) and the Office for Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services (ODLOS) are currently accepting applications for librarian advisors to the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Great Stories Club<https://apply.ala.org/greatstories> (TRHT GSC)'s Implementation Team. Funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, the TRHT GSC is a literary reading and discussion program for underserved and at-risk populations, particularly young adults. ALA PPO has awarded GSC grants to more than 800 libraries since 2006, and with new funding from the Kellogg Foundation, will expand the program model to include racial healing sessions for participating youth, library staff, and community partners.

Librarians selected to serve as TRHT GSC advisors will plan, develop, and deliver print, web-based, and in-person programming support and learning experiences for up to 100 TRHT GSC grantee libraries. They will also participate in a collaborative planning process involving ALA staff, representatives from funding agencies, literature scholars, historians, and creative artists.

ALA encourages participation by all people, especially those who may experience racism or discrimination on the basis of ability, appearance, ethnicity, immigrant status, religious background, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Please feel free to include information about your identity and experiences in your statement of interest.

Desired qualifications/experience:

  1.  Service to underserved, under-resourced, and/or at-risk groups including:
     * Public librarians with experience conducting outreach to young adults experiencing homelessness, residing in public housing, or living in group homes; OR
     * School librarians who work within an alternative high school, or conduct specialized programming for alternative classrooms; OR
     * Librarians who have worked within, or in partnership with, juvenile justice agencies; OR
     *   Tribal or Native librarians.
  2. Experience designing, developing, facilitating, and teaching interactive workshops, in person and/or online.
  3. Experience moderating or co-moderating literary discussion programs.
  4. Demonstrated ability to engage in collaborative planning.

Successful candidates must be:

  *   Available to attend one-hour, monthly web-based planning meetings, December 2017 - June 2018.
  * Available to work on content development from December 2017-June 2018.
  * Some advisors will be asked to participate as presenters in a 1 ½ day orientation workshop for grantees. Workshops will take place in November 2018 and January 2019 in Chicago, and all travel-related expenses will be covered by ALA.

Because the TRHT GSC will be offered to eligible libraries in the U.S. and its territories, we are seeking representatives from U.S. libraries for this opportunity. ALA PPO will provide TRHT GSC Implementation Team members with a modest honorarium, as well as reimbursement for any travel costs incurred.

To apply, please prepare the following materials. Applications must be submitted electronically as a single PDF document that includes:

  1. A statement addressing your interest in serving as a TRHT GSC advisor and your relevant qualifications (one-page max.).
  2.  Your résumé.
  3. The names and contact information for two references who have direct knowledge of your outreach experience, collaborative planning experience, and/or online/in-person presentation experience.
  4. The single PDF application must be submitted via email by 5 p.m. Central on Friday, November 17, 2017, to Brian Russell, program coordinator for the Great Stories Club (brussel at ala.org<mailto:brussell at ala.org>).

ALA PPO and ODLOS staff will review all applications. The process will include a telephone interview and a reference check prior to selection. All applicants will be notified of their status by November 30, 2017.
