The Outsiders might be a good sub-in. I don’t recall clear themes of change and poverty, but the regret in the book could make for an interesting counter balance to the class.

Might the teacher consider changing the unit to a different book that all the students could enjoy?

I suppose there's no chance of convincing the parents of the moral and literary value of Dickens, and that Christmas is a small part of the book?...

Possibly Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate. It does deal with poverty. Although, it is modern day instead of historical.

Hello!
Looking for an alternative reading selection for a 7th grade male student reading at a 4th grade level. Our 7th grade students are reading A Christmas Carol and we have a student who is a Jehovah’s Witness who will not be reading the book. We need a book to have him read instead that has a theme similar to A Christmas Carol (change, poor people not getting enough, etc...). Any suggestions?
