[ISLMA-Share] copyright in art question

We have the book Rose Blanche as a part of our school LA curriculum. It's
a book with drawings/paintings by Roberto Innocenti depicting WWII.
One of my students happened to find this photograph:

and this is image in the book:

So we are wondering if anyone knows how to defend this in terms of
copyright? How closely can an artist depict another work of art?
