You handled this perfectly! Privacy of records in a school library is just as important as in a public library. Perhaps even more so, as we are modeling to students that their privacy rights are to be respected. I've had this discussion with parents and staff members many times, and have never had an escalation once the situation is explained.

I've worked in public libraries for many years and am very committed to the privacy of patron checkout records. Yesterday a teacher was looking for a book, and my assistant told her it was checked out. The teacher asked who had it. My assistant replied in a friendly manner that that info was private. The teacher was aghast, and said that it had never been that way at the school. I tried to deflect the situation by telling her I'd put a hold on it and she would have it very soon. I also told her I could get it from the public library if she needed it immediately. She really didn't need it but couldn't stop expressing her dismay at the "private records."

I'm very curious. Do you all give out that information to teachers?

Thanks very much.
