[ISLMA-Share] Question about alarm system

We removed our security gate about 5 years ago. We found that some cell phones and laptops were activating it and thus had more false alarms than actual alarms. I agree with others who believe teenagers really aren’t looking to steal books from a library. Even if kids “forget” to actually check out a book it generally finds its way back to us by the end of the year.
Removing the gates allowed us to open up the entrance/exit of our library which makes it a more welcoming atmosphere.

Subject: [ISLMA-Share] Question about alarm system

How many libraries out there have alarm systems for their books? We have one, and it work well. However, it is old, and expensive to buy the detuning cards, the pockets, and the alarm stickers for the books. How many of you have a different kind of system, how effective is it, and how many of you simply have no alarm system for theft? We are weighing our options.

Thanks,
Brooke Nelson
