There is MINOR language and some romance scenes, but nothing overt. The
books are a bit grittier, but, as a conservative parent, I allowed my own
kiddo to read these books. I would suggest reading them first, before
introducing them to a class. If I think of a few more, I will share them.

Stalking Jack the Ripper-A little horror, some tense situations, it is more
mature, but nothing too overt.
Splintered-Modern day Alice In Wonderland-Very high-interest, elegant
darkness, skaters, interesting family dynamics to study, learning how to
choose your own path, some romance, etc.
Reawakened series-Egyptian mythology, choosing your own path, tense family
situations
Ella Enchanted--this is actually a fabulous book that is NOTHING like the
movie. It has some high-level vocab.
The Alchemyst by Michael Scott (The Immortal Nicholas Flamel series)--Great
book to bring in awesome discussions of history and culture, as well as a
good opportunity to expand vocab.
