Nearly anyone from the Harlem Renaissance: Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay, etc have a ton of stuff written about them so they would be very easy to study.

You’ve also got great midcentury writers like Lorraine Hansberry or contemporary writers like Roxane Gay or Ta-Nehisi Coates. They’ve got a solid amount of criticism written about them.

When I was in high school, I’d typically meet with the teachers, discuss what they hoped to accomplish or any particular projects they hoped to incorporate and go from there. Often, I’d do a background activity to start them off (like for Raisin in the Sun, I did a Kahoot about LH’s early life in Chicago and the racist practices at the time) or a Breakout EDU game for the Harlem Ren to finish off the unit.

Hi!

I'm a high school Librarian and an English teacher has asked me to suggest texts for seniors to study- especially from an author who is not white and male and, preferably, not from Europe.

What do your English seniors study? We have both IB (International Baccalaureate) and College Prep, so advanced students and your very average students.

How is the text chosen? Have you ever been asked to contribute ideas?

I'm very glad she has asked and am eager to research. The teacher suggested that it's very helpful to have a novel, play, etc., on which research has been conducted, so it is easier to teach the work.

Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions.

Lori
