[ISLMA-Share] Packing a Library

I’ve had to move my library twice due to construction. Both times, the moving company had book shelves on wheels. That allowed me to put the books onto a cart in the same order that the books came off. Then some mailing labels on the shelves to say what went where and it worked perfectly. Skip the boxes.

Sincerely,

Alan, Librarian serving Brooks Middle School

  *   Number boxes 1 of 20, 2 of 20, 3 of 20.
  * Pack boxes in reverse order by bay or shelf so unpacking is easier.
  * Use recycle paper balled up to hold books in place in boxes so they don't shift. (We had a snowball party with life skills students to help do this task.)
  * Use different colored paper for different sections, i.e. pink = nonfiction, green = fiction, etc.
  * Label shelves so the exact shelf is put back in it's exact place. (I had 4 reference shelves put back in the wrong spot and it was a lot of resizing shelves to get books to fit.) Maybe even draw a map.

(Most of this was done by my predecessor and I am so glad she took time to do this so detailed, as she packed it, and I unpacked it.)

Hi, all,

We are getting new flooring this summer and I'll have to pack up all the books to move the shelves. Any words of advice for those of you who have had to do this yourself? If you had a company do this, can you give me an idea of how much it cost?

Thanks in advance!
