I think it depends a lot on the culture of your building and the amount of
advance preparation you and the teachers are willing to do and have time
for. If you have assemblies where all students fit into the gym and are
generally well-behaved, a single presentation can work. However, it is
always better if students are familiar with the author's work so they have
interest and context. If you or your LA teachers do not have adequate time
to prep all the students, you might consider a smaller group. For example,
if there is one teacher who loves the author and wants to get all of
his/her students ready, you could limit it that way. Or you could have a
book club read the author's books and/or students submit a short writing
assignment about the author or books in order to "qualify" to go. Think (or
ask others) about how things have gone with other guest speakers or
assemblies in the past and go from there. Also, if it turns out to be a
whole-school event, please ask for help from a group of teachers/staff and
don't try to do everything yourself--an author visit is a huge undertaking.
