Ghosthawk by Susan Cooper. Very-well researched historically, but has a
little fantasy....a colonial boy develops a supernatural friendship with a
slain Native American, giving him a unique perspective on the relationship
between the Native Americans and the colonists. Excellent writing, would
also support writer's craft standards.

"The simplest way to make sure that we raise literate children is to teach
them to read, and to show them that reading is a pleasurable activity. And
that means, at its simplest, finding books that they enjoy, giving them
access to those books, and letting them read them." -- Gaiman, Neil. "Neil
