Orca book publishers have books that appeal to 12+ that have a third grade reading level. I just glanced at the website and saw the book “Impossible” that might be just what you are looking for.

I was thinking Jake Maddox books would be good. I also thought Dolphin Adventure, Hachiko Waits, and Night of the Twisters, but although they are short, their levels are around 5th grade. Does anyone have any suggestions?
