[ISLMA-Share] advise needed

They’re both excellent books, but I would worry that they’re simply too advanced content-wise for 5th graders. Ender’s Game is so reliant on psychology and war strategies and Flowers for Algernon’s so dependent on the reader making inferences from the text; that I’d worry the teachers would be setting themselves up for an unsatisfactory experience, simply because children that age tend to do better with a straight forward narrative.

Maybe something like Phantom Tollbooth or A Wrinkle in Time with their simpler structure, but academically complex math and science content would be better choices?

A couple of questions on some book choices: How do you feel about a 5th grade AT (academically talented) class reading either Ender's Game or Flowers for Algernon in their entirety ?

I was asked for input, which I gave, and also said I would ask my colleagues what their thinking was about those books for an upper elementary level class read.

Please email me off-list & I'll be glad to discuss with you further.
Thanks so much for any responses.
