[ISLMA-Share] High School: Fake News

I do a fun lesson that isn't entirely on fake news, but it includes fake
news in our search for credible and balanced sources.

In the midst of the junior research paper lessons, students prep by reading
a handout that is a reminder of the three questions they have been
repeating since middle school Who? How? Why? When they get to the library
I show them a short video produced from Sweden about fact checking a story
about Christmas lights. Then we review a chart created by Otero (a lawyer)
that shows a scale of relative reading-difficulties and biases of popular
media outlets--focusing on balancing and fact-checking against extremes.
We look at two or three sites together. I remind students to use the About
Us features and to search companies on Wikipedia if their websites are not
forthcoming. Then to check for understanding, I have a Source Evaluation
Smackdown to put it in action. Students work in teams of four. I have 20
sites I have chosen and posted on our library homepage. They are a
combination of credible sources (so our students are exposed to good ones
because many of them couldn't name very many reliable news outlets),
outright fake news, sources that attempt to hide their bias, sources that
clearly state their bias, and some that are credible but known for their
liberal or conservative leanings. The chart they turn in requires them to
identify who is responsible for the information, and then if they reject
it, why they think it is a bad source. The team each hour that gets the
most correct earns library amnesty passes to pay off fines.

If anybody would be interested in the actual links and copies of the
handout, please send your requests directly to my email:
