Gene Luen Yang's fee including travel and accommodations will be close to $10,000.00. We split it three ways: school, public library and university, and then we split the school portion between the library, the PTO and the Freshman English Department.

We started developing our proposal with his agent after he was named National Ambassador for Children's Literature but before he won the MacArthur Genius Grant. We had to plan his visit a year in advance to get a date he was available that we were in school.

Our Freshman English classes read American Born Chinese and have for years so by now every student has read--and most own a personal copy--of his work. They will be selling his books at the event at the public library, but we won't be here at school.

Gretchen -
If you don't mind me asking, what is "expensive?" We are hosting Matt de la Pena this year and his fee is
the highest I have paid for an author visit.

We are hosting Gene Luen Yang in March. I am very excited about his visit. He is expensive so we partnered with the public library and ISU College of English to bring him to town. From beginning to end, it will have been 18 months from the start of our planning to the date he was available to visit, but every student is our school has read his work and his message is relevant.

I say dream big, work to make it happen and be flexible.

Who knows you may be able to get your dream author!

We had Kwame Alexander this year. I don't know how we could afford it, but WOW. He was great AND he gives lots of credit to librarians.

Hi All,
Our APT writes a grant each year to get an author to come visit our school. The few they’ve reached out to for next year (Matthew de la Pena, Jon Scieszka, and Christopher Curtis Paul) either aren’t making school visits next year or haven’t replied. We’re lucky enough to have Jack Gantos visiting us this week.

I’m recommending Jacqueline Woodson to our APT, but her schedule may get filled up quickly for next year.

So – what authors would you recommend to visit and speak to 7th/8th grade students?

Thank you!
