[ISLMA-Share] Memoirs

Well, I'm old too and worked in libraries since 6th grade (actually
thinking of retirement now for first time). I fought the trend till last
year. Honestly having worked in public libraries for over 12 years and
worked in academic for 6 years, I can tell you patrons/students do not have
a recollection of *any* substantive nature of the DDC. Seriously.
Universities use Library of Congress which has zero carry-over from DDC.
We all survive. The two local libraries here that my students use have
genrefied their fiction collections from Childrens through YA. Adult
collection will most certainly follow. So....it was time to kick in and I
genrefied my fiction. I am doing some serious adaptations of Dewey for
nonfiction to pull together related materials and get rid of having to know
geography in order to get books on a particular country. I'm a history
teacher as well and it makes me sad on one side, but upside, I LOVE sending
AP government students to one area to get their book report materials.
I've integrated biographies and civil rights and government (just US) into
the 900s. So I'm making my library work for my students in the here and
now and trust that they will ask for help at the public library or
university library as the case may be.
