I have struggled with this for years. I decided to add to the list. We now
do a "Bulldog Best" list along (grown to 136 books) with the Caudills and
those books are recommended by their peers. The quizzes are often made by
their peers also. The Bulldog list basically stays year to year with
add-ons or deletions depending on circulation. In addition to more options
to read, I've added (not my idea but my HS director's) a button incentive.
The kids love it, as do the teachers who read. (I have student helpers who
make the pins) They receive buttons for each book they read and take
quizzes on. The buttons then decorate their school lanyards and/or book
bags. Kids will read the book just to get a specific pin they like! If
they earn twenty 20 stickers in a year they receive the bulldog pin. We try
to hype that up. Teachers and admin know about the pins and are instructed
to ask kids about them whenever possible as a mini promotion.

They earn 1 sticker for books that are under 400pgs and 2 for those over
400. Stickers add up to prizes (see poster) and their name is put in a $5
weekly drawing with each book. The money comes from our $5 for lost ID
account so money from kids go straight back to kids. I bring in the
public library in to do Caudill book talks at the beginning of the year and
have lunch in the library once a month to give book talks on the Bulldog
Best books as well as others. I also have book trailers of all our reading
program books on our website. I had only 2 7/8th graders participate a
couple of years ago and this year I have 38 7th graders and 31 8th
graders. My 6th grade has always participated the most. This year I have
62 students. I feel like it's coming along....slowly. Biggest thing is
promotion, promotion, promotion and the buttons help, as does lunches and
the weekly reminder with the $5 drawing. I know I need to get the kids
names out there when they achieve certain landmarks - 5 books, 10 books
etc. Saying those names during announcements and putting them up on our tv
scroller is another thing I want to do...just have not had time to do.

Hope this helps! I'm ALWAYS look for more ideas too!

(Caudill posters & 8th grade posters w/stickers are on a separate wall)
