We have been doing this for over ten years. We rotate among 3 books so that
we can reuse books (although we've updated a title or two along the way).
Last summer we read *Wonder*. Next up is Cynthia Lord's* Rules*, then back
to Neal Shusterman's *The Shadow Club*. We tried to pick books that can be
used as springboards for discussions of bullying, empathy, etc. Our PTO has
donated money so that we can buy paperbacks, and we reuse them. I check the
book out to the student for the summer and they are due about a month into
the school year, after the teachers have finished their discussions.
Usually I get the author to come visit, although RJ Palacio was a little
busy this year!
