My son’s school has a punch card system. Short books get only one punch on the card and longer chapter books get more punches for completion. Writing reviews for the Destiny catalog gets extra credit punches. Kids can use those punches to “buy” prizes. There are cheap prizes like bounce balls, bubbles, pencils and stickers. There are middle prizes like small snacks or treats and color books. Finally there are “expensive” prizes like new books, action figures, card games or small board games. Many of these prizes are found at dollar stores and places like Half Price Books.

It really works well for the kids in his school. It motivates the reading and teaches kids some decision making skills while practicing math. If they want bigger prizes they need to read longer books, more books, and even write reviews. My son even saves to bring home treats and prizes for his 4 year old brother.

His school is not well funded but still manages this cool incentive so it is possible on a very small budget.

Subject: [ISLMA-Share] Reading Incentives Prizes for 4th and 5th?

Hello,
I am looking for ideas for monthly reading incentive prizes for my 4th and 5th graders. They do not want brag tags, pencils or erasers. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Amy
