[ISLMA-Share] Librarian-in-Training Survey

I read nearly every day on my lunch period, at least a good 20 mins and I listen to audiobooks on my commute to and from work (another total 30 m ins or so). If we are in testing I can fit in about another 1-2 hours in a workday as I only have test grading, not proctoring, duties.

I consider reading novels and non-fic material my “homework”. Classroom teachers have papers, labs, and math to grade during free periods and on lunch. I have books to get through. I need to know them better than just by reviews in order to get the right book into the right kid’s hand. So I feel perfectly justified plowing through a novel on a work day break. I have also read during pep rallies while all students are in the gym, during Mass Days (Catholic school) again while students are in the gym and occupied. It’s my homework and professional development. I’m a better librarian if I truly know the books.

Thankfully, I’m a fast reader. I get through 200 or more novels a year and about 30-40 graphic novels as well that is content for my high school students. But the bulk of that reading does happen at home and on breaks.

Subject: Re: [ISLMA-Share] Librarian-in-Training Survey

This survey brings about a question from me: Do you read books from your libraries during the working day? Is this normal practice?

I will sample a chapter here and there as I receive an order or catalog books, but (other than picture books), I've never read an entire book during working hours, even broken up over time. I do it on my own, outside of school (which limits me a bit, as I have two very active kids). If you all are able to do it during the school day, that's great (and I'm jealous). I am just wondering if this is "normal practice" for school library professionals. If so, how much would you say you are able to devote to reading at school each week?

Thanks!

Linda,

I did not mean to be sarcastic in my response, but I took the question as personal, not professional, reading. When my children were younger, of course I read multiple picture books every night and as they got older, chapter books. But, it has only been the last couple of years, when my own children are out of the house and my grandchildren only come for a visit, that I can read for pleasure. I am a HS librarian, so I am constantly reading sections, excerpts, reviews, for the YA material that I purchase. Sometimes I have the time to read a complete book, but often I simply do not. I am personally in a book club and we read about 10 books in the year, but often I only get to read 6-8 of them. But, I am constantly reading. I try to keep up with current educational articles, always reviews for ordering, current events, research for fellow teachers and students, etc. My job as a school librarian is reading and research intensive, it just does not allow time for complete books for personal enjoyment. One of the things I am looking forward to in retirement is the time to read what I want to read, not what I need to read for my job. Does this answer your question? If this is not the response you wanted on the survey, please reword or explain the question.

So glad you asked for clarification. I always want to assist MLS students.

I have a question on the "The 15 books you have read? "

Is that on your own time? Or for the classroom? For work/being a professional? Or to your own small children who love "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" and "Blaze the Monster Machine" over and over again? :)

Dear ISLMA Community,

I am currently an MLIS student at UW-Milwaukee seeking participants to complete a 4-question, 10 minute survey for one of my courses about reading behaviors. All of the responses will be confidential and the results will only be used for the purpose of my assignment.

If you have 10 minutes to spare, I would be grateful! Please see the below link to participate:
