We use picture books when we study different cultural interpretations of classic stories like Cinderella, Robin Hood or Little Red Riding Hood. It makes them so accessible, and the art is a huge part of the representation.

All of those reasons and more. When I was a classroom teacher, I used Chris Van Allsburg’s books to teach writing traits and reading strategies. Picture books can also be used to teach literary elements and elements of story, they can be used as model texts for the students’ own writing, and as lead ins for social studies content, science content, math content, and more. Some picture books are geared toward older students, and aren’t appropriate for younger kids.

Here’s a great article on using picture books with tweens and teens: https://www.slj.com/2018/02/books-media/never-old-embracing-picture-books-teach-older-students/#_

What is the purpose of the collection? For your students' own enjoyment? For them to discuss as literature? For them to read to younger students?

I am planning on starting a small picture book section for my junior high library. Any ideas for MUST HAVES?
