Here's an overview of the event:
"The GEMS Global Design Challenge is a 2-day event during which students in
grades 5 through 10 will engage in research and development around a
solution related to one of the following United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals: <https://www.globalgoals.org/>No Poverty,
<https://www.globalgoals.org/1-no-poverty>Lifeon Land,
<https://www.globalgoals.org/15-life-on-land> Life Below Water
<https://www.globalgoals.org/14-life-below-water>, Gender Equality
<https://www.globalgoals.org/5-gender-equality>, and Clean Water and
Sanitation. <https://www.globalgoals.org/6-clean-water-and-sanitation> The
17 Sustainable Development Goals were defined by 193 members of United
Nations as a path to solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges by
year 2030. This event will offer students an opportunity to grow as leaders
and create meaningful action.

With the support of Global Goals content mentors from the United Nations
Association of Chicago and local experts as project mentors, students will
work in teams to research their goals, design a solution to one of the goal
targets and pitch their solutions to judges. Solution possibilities can
range from designing an action campaign plan, developing an app, designing
a product or creating a public-art installation."
