[ISLMA-Share] Making new book covers

I used to do this with students drawing the designs, but have not since I moved to a school with all new books. These were my rules.

1. Select a book from the coverless books on the designated library bookshelves. Ask the library staff for help.

2. Check out the book.

3. Design a cover that relates to the title of the book or to the content of the book. You don’t have to read it.

4. Include the book title and author on the front cover. It would also be helpful if you could write the book title on the spine of the book, but not necessary.

5. You may use the paper provided by the library or you may use your own paper.

6. On the back of the book write “Cover art by _______________” and add your own name.

7. Bring your book back to the library by Monday, October 22.

8. Judging will take place the week of October 22. All staff and students may vote. There will be a Staff Choice Award as well as a Student Choice Award. All entrants will receive a pen. Winners will receive bookstore gift certificates. All books will keep their new covers until the books are someday discarded from the library shelves.

Many, many years ago I made new covers myself. That was a cut-and-paste project (literally). I can't wait to see what you can do with all the tools available now!

I don't have an answer to your question, but I love the idea! Would you be willing to post photos of some of the final products?

Hi collective brain!

I am weeding some books at my school, and of course, have come across some great titles with boring and outdated covers. Has anyone done a project with students where they created new covers for old books that was successful? I am thinking of having students re-create covers using an online program like Canva to make them look more professional. I would love any ideas or suggestions you have.

Thanks!
