[ISLMA-Share] title stumper

I have a student who is looking for a book he read but cannot remember the
author/title. Here's his description:

Science Fiction
Male protagonist
On another planet
Gets "shot" with some sort of device that is supposed to make people
"separate" however he doesn't completely separate and then comes back
whole. It leaves him with the ability to walk through barriers, etc.
Ends up meeting a girl who helps him attempt to overcome the "bad guys"

He said he remembers an outer space looking cover.

Any ideas???  It's not Obsidian Blade.
