Since I did such a bang up job of describing the book one of our students
would like to read again, I had him write a much better description. Here
it is:

*Science fiction, futuristic. Setting is on several other planets and some
space ships. Main character is a teenage boy who lost his memory of the
last couple of weeks. He slowly discovers that he can phase through
objects. For example, at one time he phased through a cage he was trapped
in; another time someone attempted to stab him but the blade phased through
him. He is being helped by a girl, a spoiled kid, and maybe his sister? I
can't be sure about the last. They run into space pirates at one point. The
main villains are a gang of criminals that use teleportation guns to
scatter people, but don't reassemble them again. So it kills them. The boy
was struck by a prototype of one of these, which gives him the ability to
phase. There are androids that appear to be real people, and the boy and
his friends are chased by the police. That's all I can remember. *
