We use Destiny and email the notice to the parents. This seems to help a great deal. Of course we are a K-5 which may make a difference.

Subject: [ISLMA-Share] Emailing Parents

Hello!
I'd like to get some input on emailing parents when their kiddos have overdue books or library fines.

Since we've gone more automated and paperless this year and are not passing our paper overdue notices anymore, I've had so many students with overdue books and fines than ever. I have Follett Destiny set up to generate email overdue notices to students every Monday, but the kids simply aren't checking their emails. This has been a problem all year anyway for pretty much every teacher, not just the library, But this is getting ridiculous. I have kids who checked books out in October and still have not returned it. And just an FYI, I have not been allowed to prevent a student from checking out a book because of overdue books or fines.

So... Is there anyone out there who has uploaded parent email addresses into Destiny for the purpose of emailing their students overdue notices? What has the parent response been like? Has anyone been afraid to do this because of the Library Bill of Rights and student privacy issues?

General thoughts from the collective intelligence?
