[AISLE-Share] Picture books in the MS

I have a variety of picture books that we won through various grants. Hence, the picture books are in two locations.

The ones from a writing grant that are intended as props for teachers to use during instruction are in our professional collection. These get used very sparingly.

The other picture books are from 2 other grants; one for low-level readers and one for the “babysitters’ collection.” These books are mixed in with the collection. For example, Down, Down, Down is in non-fiction right by the ocean biomes eventhough the most frequent user is one of our science teachers that uses it as a prop.

Sincerely,

Alan, Librarian serving Brooks Middle School

Subject: Re: [AISLE-Share] Picture books in the MS

I have a collection of picture books for my older readers. They are in my genefried fiction collection. I catalog them:

FIC
PICTURE
Author Last Name.

I call the section "Picture Books for Older Readers," and note that as a sub-location in my library. The picture books are quite popular with kids who still like to look at pictures with stories, and they are frequently used in older classrooms when the topic/theme fits in with the curriculum.

Most recently I'm using them with my 5th graders because we are doing blackout poetry. They are perfect for that!

For those of you in the middle school, do you have picture books, and if so, how do you catalog them?

Are they separate on the shelf or are they mixed in with the fiction and nonfiction?
