[AISLE-Share] H S book budget

Students generally prefer print books here as well. We still have a building print book budget, but the district pays for OverDrive. The junior highs have much higher OverDrive circulation rates, so I will expect to see the high school students gradually shift to more eBooks as those students move up through high school. Then again, the junior high students have much higher circulation rates for print books, too.

Katie Pausch,

Thank you! I agree. Students prefer physical books!!! Not only do I see all of what you are saying, but here it is like a badge of honor. They want and are proud to carry around a book!

My high school in a well-funded district with a large college bound student population has a healthy budget dedicated to books that amounts to over $6 per student. We also have a separate budget for ebooks. I have found that students much prefer physical books to our ebooks (which they can check out to their own device through Overdrive or on a Nook device we provide). If our physical book is checked out but the ebook is available, nine times out of ten they say they'll just wait until the book returns. I find that digital books can be helpful for reference materials that need multiple copies, for a niche group of readers, or for very popular books, but our circulation of books is vastly higher than our digital library's circulation, despite our large and perceived convenience of our digital collection.

If you're trying to make the case to your administration that keeping actual books matters, research supports that readers tend to prefer books to ebooks, and that readers learn and retain more from a physical copy than a digital one. I think you can also make a case for not increasing the amount of screen time our teenagers already experience in any given day:

If you are a high school librarian that still receives a budget for purchasing books, please reply to this post.

I know that some high schools are eliminating libraries with books - is it still called a library then?

I would like proof that while some schools are eliminating books in the library, there are still many high schools that still see the value of a library with books.

I hope to hear from many of you!!!!!!!!!

Thank you in advance
