Summary:

When twelve-year old Rebecca Carter's father brings a Native American accused of murder into their 1812 Ohio settlement town, Rebecca, witnessing the town's reaction to the Indian, struggles with the idea that an innocent man may be convicted and sentenced to death.

Subject: [AISLE-Share] Help with Book Title

I don't have much to go on but a student is desperately trying to find the name of a book his 4th grade teacher read to him.  This is what the student is telling me - remember not my words :)

teacher said the book had some difficult/adult themes
Pioneer/Oregon Trail time
Dad in book inclusive of all races
Native Americans hideout in barn - the family protect them
Family has slaves/positive relationship
