Good morning Barb,

I am a firm believer to include as much as possible when I do original cataloging. I agree that the kids cannot find a book if it is only title and author. When I inherited this library 15 years ago, the records were awful. Someone put the price in the subject field. Often I had records that were just title and occasionally the author. It took me 2 years just to add ISBNs to every item. Then I purchased a subscription to MARC Recon for a year. It cleaned up my records within a week. The ISBN was the key to making it work.

CAUTION: Strict catalogers should stop reading here. ☺

Well, nowadays, I intentionally over-catalog. I include both Sears and LOC subject headings. Lately I’ve added/modified the book seller headings. The more I include, the likelier my students are to find the book. One of the tricks I use is to find the same book in World CAT by using a title and author match. Then when I enter it, I add the ISBN from both versions.

For AV equipment, I even add the connections in a 538 field. Here’s a headset I added:
Gear Head Headset [realia] : Model AU3700S.

This over cataloging made it real easy on me when I had to find equipment for ACCESS testing. For those that are not familiar with ACCESS testing, it is for our ESL students. Part of the test is oral. Part is audio. Part is written. Part is reading. All on computer.

In summary, take your time when you enter items. It will save you lots of time later on.

Sincerely,

Alan, Librarian serving Brooks Middle School

What do you include in your MARC records when doing original cataloging? I'm finding many records with just titles and or title and author in our collection. I don't see how kids can find the books unless they already know the title and/or author of the book they are seeking. Thoughts?
