Could it possibly be this book? It’s called Crooked River. This is the Summary: When twelve-year old Rebecca Carter's father brings a Native American accused of murder into their 1812 Ohio settlement town, Rebecca, witnessing the town's reaction to the Indian, struggles with the idea that an innocent man may be convicted and sentenced to death.

Except the Native American is held prisoner in a room in their house awaiting trial.

Aimee,

It reminds me of Sarah Plain and Tall, but it's a girl main character. Hope this helps!
Thanks!

teacher said the book had some difficult/adult themes
Pioneer/Oregon Trail time
Dad in book inclusive of all races
Native Americans hideout in barn - the family protect them
Family has slaves/positive relationship

Thank you!
