[AISLE-Share] Staffing within libraries

I work in a K-5 Building that has a fixed schedule, and I’m considered a “Specials” teacher.  There are so many factors that can affect the quality of your “teaching” time with your students.  I try to get in a 15 minute lesson with each class, but class size, behavior issues, teachers arriving late to drop off, teachers wanting to pick up early, and students who take very long to decide upon their book selections all  affect how much you can accomplish.

This year I have 2 fewer sections but on Monday I see 6 classes and 4 of them are combined with Special Ed self-contained classrooms.  This pushes the 5th grade class of 34 into a class of 45.  Checking out is about all that can be accomplished during the 30 minute time slot because of a large number of students.

My solution currently is to have my Special Ed classes come down 10 minutes early to select their books.  Then the aide that stays with the class checks out their books while I teach my lesson.  She also helps to check in books.

I was told by my administration to get volunteers, but we all know how that goes.  They aren’t usually dependable, or they don’t like the work and drop out, etc.

As far as knowing what the teachers are doing, you will have to try and set up a planning time with them, or when they have their scheduled meetings, ask to pop in for 5-10 minutes.

I'm meeting with our building principals to discuss the need for additional staffing and possible revamping of the elementary "fixed schedule".  To help me with my talking points, could you please share whether classroom teachers accompany and stay with their classes when students visit the library?  I'm struggling because library time is part of our teachers' prep and they provide me with little support/guidance as to what content they are covering or reading levels/interests of their students, making my role a bit more challenging.  Any additional advice you can provide as I advocate for the library and its role in educating students would be much appreciated.
