The students do very well with self-checkout. I don't have as much a problem with honesty as I see with mistakes. We use a page of barcodes for each homeroom class - sometimes they accidentally scan someone else's name, but it usually gets caught and corrected. The key is the self checkin - when checking in is their responsibility, you don't have to tolerate the 'But I KNOW I turned it in!' arguments. If you're going to allow easy overrides, you might as well stay at your desk... Christine Wilson847.727.6743

 I know what you mean!
We have provided self-checkout for 2 years now. They are very honest and very few mistakes are made.  Either myself or my assistant is almost always near so we can keep an eye or help, if needed.
We are now using Destiny's parent email for overdue notices and fines rather than paper which wastes paper and we aren't sure get home or even read if they do make it home.  I can keep you updated on how this is working, if you'd like.

Thank you. I agree about the 30-minute scramble. I have added Open Library times and encourage teachers to send their kids to the library on an "as needed" basis, but they are scrambling to find more instructional minutes. It's a dance to get things working right.
I'm curious about your self-checkout. Do you find that your elementary students are honest, reliable, capable, 100% of the time? How can you rely on accuracy when running overdue and lost item reports?

Since we don't have a fixed time with them and they have flex checkout, we have set up a chromebook that has self-checkout for them.   I had a few lessons where I demonstrated how to do it, how to search and how to find a book.  It alleviated that 30 minute scramble.  I pull the classes as needed to go over library standards or embed them when I push into classroom curricular lessons to coteach.
Just a thought....we found that the 30 minute book checkout was a scramble, some kids didn't need to check out a book because they were still reading a book and it we felt it was less productive than a flex model.  Happy to share with you how to set it up, if that's of interest.

I have a class of 23 4th graders who each check out up to 3 books per visit. I see them for 30 minutes. I struggle with getting them all checked out in time and with strategies for keeping them on task. On task meaning: locating a book, reading, searching the OPAC, working on a worksheet, etc.
Does anyone have any strategies that work?
