[AISLE-Share] Girl Sports

A few years ago I researched this topic for a YA literature grad class. I
interviewed YA writers, corresponded on writing sites, talked to
publishers, etc. and everyone said the same thing. There are not books
about women athletes because women have not been athletes. Title IX was
only passed in June 1972 (the summer before my senior year in HS) and many
schools (my HS included) did not immediately include girls sports. It only
happened because they were forced to do so and not because they wanted to
do so. Therefore, many schools did not make it easy for girls to
participate. I never had the opportunity to participate in any school
sports. Girls have been able to participate in sports, especially team
sports for about 40 years, and then the question becomes how many of these
girls become writers. There are not very many. There are books out there
about girls participating in individual sports, like gymnastics, swimming,
tennis, etc. but only girls who grew up in households that could afford
private lessons. There are also fabulous non fiction titles including
biographies of great female athletes. My sincere hope is that a few of the
women who are in HS and college right now and who have always been able to
participate in team sports, become amazing fiction writers so that my
granddaughters and great granddaughters can read about girls like them in
team sports. Maybe you can tell that I find this topic fascinating. :)

Here is a list of a few HS books that I have about girls in team sports.
This is not extensive, just the ones I have selected and included in a HS
collection. As you can see, it is not very long. If you have other fiction
titles to add, email me off list and I will compile a google doc to share,
but please contact me off list so we don't bog down the list serve.
