Yes, it is correct that all of our Caudill Chats, including the one
with Wendelin Van Drannen, are intended as a way for tweens and adults to
"meet" the author rather than serve as a place of criticism/critique.

The Rebecca Caudill Award is a children's choice award, so the first "step"
for a book to be on the list is for the book to be nominated by our young
readers. Our Nominations Committee considers titles submitted and works
together to select 100 titles to move forward based on popularity (number
of nominations), reviews, and personal knowledge of the books, all while
using Caudill evaluation instruments as a guide. Next, there are more than
70 evaluators who volunteer to each read ten books over the summer and use
an evaluation rubric to score them. The top 50 scoring books are then read
by those same 70+ evaluators and each is discussed at length at our yearly
evaluation meeting. Each book is voted on, and 20 make it to our list of
nominees. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are frequent topics of
discussion throughout this process. Finally, it is the children across our
state who read the nominees and vote for the winner from among them, as it
is their award to give. Our last winner was *Ghost* by Jason Reynolds.

For a registered school or library to participate in the voting process, we
ask that at least 12 of the 20 titles are offered, so those uncomfortable
with a title may choose not to purchase or promote it. Adults using the
list as a reference are always encouraged to bring their own ideas,
lessons, and teachable moments to each book they share with young people,
just as they do with all books in their collections or classrooms. We are
always looking for volunteers interested in joining our team and encourage
interested people to visit our website for more information.

The Caudill Board of Directors is currently in the process of
reviewing/revising our evaluation rubrics and creating a resource bank for
our evaluators that will give them tools to help them with the nomination,
discussion and selection process. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are most
definitely being addressed throughout this endeavor.
