[aisle] End of Year Book Return

I suggested to my administration that I would reward students who brought in all of their books, paid their fines for a lost or damaged book, and if they were unable to do either, they had to get their parent to sign a note acknowledging the lost book, or damaged book fine. I thought I had all of the bases covered.
The reward was me bringing in my animals that I do programming with, my fruit bats, skunks, sugar gliders, tarantulas, and gecko. I run a small business called Incrediblebats, Inc.

I was told that I couldn’t do it because it would punish the those kids that didn’t bring in the books or the parent note, it would be punitive.

I normally charge to show my animals, and I was offering to do this for free for my students.

Aren’t there consequences in life, and I really thought I had all the bases covered so everyone would be included.

My library aide announces the classes that have returned all books over the intercom each morning. Kids are so excited to hear their class mentioned.

We have a display television that shows a Google slide show that has meme reminders like the one above and a countdown of which classes have turned in all their books. The first 5 to turn them all in gets a special recess or STEAM activity with me.
It works really well.

I emailed all student patrons this meme (below) and wowzer -- stacks of books in the return bin the next morning.
Enjoy your summer!

This may not be popular but I don’t give incentives. The kids who are the last to turn things in are often those who don’t have much/any support at home. On top of it the kids who have support look down on them for causing the class to not get the reward. In some cases the child wishes the family could pay for a replacement but the family is not able to do so.

I do thank all the kids for turning books in, take the time to talk with those missing books (in a caring way) about where they might find the book. Where do they remember seeing it? Should we call home and leave a message so they remember to look for the book? Can a friend help them go through the locker or desk?

Just my 2 cents, respecftfully,
Carolyn

At the elementary level, does anyone give out incentives to classrooms as a whole who have returned all of their library books? Ideas are welcome!
