This is a great big THANK YOU to Nicole Fairless for posting about button
and lanyard incentives for the Lincoln Award on the AISLE listserv last
year. I want to share how we've used the idea this year.

Our Nov. 2019 participation has doubled Nov. 2018 numbers. Each student
receives a lanyard, a Lincoln 2020 button, and their first book button when
they tell me about their first book read. 35 students have at least one
book button. Of the eight students who have their four books read, there's
a competition to see who can finish all 20 books first. Today I sent out
60 Lincoln Award brochures to students we've seen carrying the books around
but who haven't reported to me yet. Six of our teachers are reading along
and also wear their button lanyards. We keep track of readers, titles
read, and buttons earned in a spreadsheet.

I ordered the 1" button maker and paper punch from
https://www.americanbuttonmachines.com/. We ordered the blue READ lanyards
from Demco https://www.demco.com/multilingual-read-lanyard. We made half
of the button designs in MS Word with the book titles on the front, and the
other half we cut scrapbooking paper and put the title on the button's
back. (We thought we'd let students vote on which kind they like better
for 2021, as well as what kind of lanyard.) I have a plastic box with
dividers to contain the different stages of button production. Our LMC
student volunteers make new buttons every week, and everything is stored in
a large drawer in our workroom. I've attached a few photos.

Most importantly, the buttons are sparking new conversations between the
students about the books. Overheard this week between sophomore girls,
"You read Mexican Daughter? Go get Poet X!" and "Wait, what? There's a
different book that's just one day in New York?"

Again, thank you for sharing your idea on the listserv!
