Ben:

We genrefied our fiction section, and we increased our circulation by 272%. I would never go back. If you’d like to learn more, I will be presenting at AISLE on Saturday from 3-4: “We’re Bringing Reading Back.”

1. I genrefied in combination with an increase in independent reading and a renovation. It makes it so much easier for students to connect with reading when they can browse with a more defined purpose!

2. Tinted labels make changing genres pretty easy. It is a fluid job, one that you have to be committed to moving around.

3. Know your shelf space. My fantasy section was HUGE. I broke off a mythology/folklore/fairy tale section, and it is one of the most circulated sections.

4. Use Follett if you have it. They will create an excel list for you to start genrefying, and that was my “at home” work. I made changes and didn’t always side with their genre classification, but it was a great starting point.

5. I am currently only genrefied in fiction, and will probably keep Dewey by #, but would love to genrefy our Biographies. I think it would give new life to a tired section.

If you do it, you won’t regret it. I haven’t had one day (this is year two), where I thought it would be better to go back. The students take more ownership in the library, and that makes me happy every day.

To Genrefy or Not to Genrefy, that is the question. I see the pros and cons of doing/not doing it, and the was wondering what you all think? Thanks!
