Maybe contact the committee and see what book got the most votes but didn’t make the list?

It's a huge trigger for a lot of kids, I would think. It is a very scary reality. Please offer an alternative for her and others, who may not be brave or comfortable enough to share their fears with you.

I just read Only Child and had an incredibly hard time getting through the book with my sobbing. The book is incredibly descriptive and emotional. I just had a student inquire about the title and let them know that it was a very sad and vivid read.

I'd just choose a similar-depth/length book of good quality for her to read as an alternative. There's nothing "magic" about Abe books. As librarians, we need to set consistent standards, yet be flexible for students' individual needs and concerns. There are so many other excellent titles to be explored!

Hello Braintrust,

I have a good student who has completed the Abe challenge (reading all 20 books) for the last 3 years. She's a senior and is a good kid. She came to me today telling me she didn't want to read Only Child because it was triggering for her (about the school shooting). I'm pretty strict about kids reading all 20 Abe books if they want the reward, but I'm wondering what you would do in this situation. She is not an overly emotional student, but this student began crying in front of me, something I've never seen her do, becuase the book made her so scared of a potential school shooting in her brother's school. So, I have an idea what I might do, but I wondered if you had any suggestions or past experience with this.

Thanks,
Brooke Nelson

ps. thanks for the previous recs for the library messengers situation.
