[aisle] Fwd: Science Fair Research

I love the idea but for our science fair you usually have to answer a question that relates to looking at data. You could do the research to help them discover a question and then prepare what data is already out there. They summarize that data and define the experiment based on what might be missing.

For example, you read an article about BPA leaking into bottled water. You discuss how does that happen? You research it and find that it is because of the plastic. You research the history of BPA and what BPA is etc. Then you move the class to think about what else comes in plastic that also might be contaminated by BOA. What about Milk? Students then research how to test for BPA.
Student then can devise the experiment based on their research and the work has also been done for their lit review.

I did part of my National Boards on teaching science. Next Generation Science Standards are a great place to look for more info. I also would be happy to discuss more if you want to email me at plwyatt at cps.edu and we can set up a time.

Mine have always been a somewhat bland looking tables with columns for keywords, database names and notes. Now I am thinking of expanding to include more of a reflection component. Wondering if anyone would also be willing to share what has been useful for students to document their research process for science fair review of literature research or similar.

To expand, students could also discuss funding of research and how the Got Milk? campaign used the research.

For the past few years I have been using the same examples (i.e lead in water) and demonstrating how to use keywords, conduct advanced searches etc. using CPS and CPL databases. Wondering what others do, particularly at the high school level, and if you have any materials to share.
