Another i just finished and just came out is They Went Left by Monica Hesse.
Her fiction books always have a twist, usually gut wrenching, that we should see coming but I never do. The clues are all there but....
It takes place just after the war and she is looking for her brother who was deported with her to the camps. She knows the rest of her family is dead. How do you reconcile this past, look for your brother, and try to figure out who you will be in the future? There are so many paths. Which one do you choose.
Even if it is not for this unit, I encourage all HS librarians to get this one. Soooooo good. Not much is written that is what comes after the war is over, especially not good ones.

I would also add: Sorry for Your Loss by Jessie Ann Foley

How about We Beat the Street by Samson Davis, et al.?

And there's a memoir about two high school students with the same name who ultimately went two different directions, one to prison and the other to a very successful career. I can't remember the title, but I remember hearing it book talked and was intrigued by their story. The title might have "The Other..." in it, like "The Other Will Something?"

The single clenched fist lifted and ready, or the open asking hand held out and waiting. Choose: for we meet by one or the other.

I'm usually pretty good at this sort of thing but working from home makes it harder for me to focus.

A freshman English teacher is looking for 12-15 titles that meet the following criteria. My aide and I brainstormed and we have maybe 6... any suggestions?

Can you think of a variety of YAL, memoirs, and plays, that focus on an individual figuring out who they are in the world? The question for this unit is: How does knowing one’s self secure a place in society?

I feel like almost any book can be interpreted as to be about that (for example, you can even argue that Harry Potter is about finding out who one is in the world) so I'm looking for the really strong ones. Thank you, members, for helping. :)
